In 1164 Sancho VI of Navarre, 'the Sage', granted Laguardia its charter as a town. Its mediaeval district and old walls, which at one point had five gateways, have now been restored and conceal more than one secret: the entire area underneath the town is dug out with cellars or 'caves' underneath dwellings and streets, at around six hundred metres deep. Stroll around its narrow streets and you will reach the Main Square and the Palace where the fabulist Félix Mª Samaniego was born. Do not fail to visit the Church of Santa María de los Reyes, with its spectacular polychrome portico, and the Church of San Juan Bautista.
