Santimamiñe Cave is found at the foot of Mount Ereñozar, 150 m above sea level. Close to this is the Hermitage of San Mamés, which gives the cave its name. It was discovered by chance in 1916, when some local children were playing there. its value and importance increased when studies showed that there was a prehistoric archaeological site at the entrance, as well as paintings and engravings.

Santimamiñe is a very complete archaeological site and is unique in Vizcaya. The series of archaeological levels, which make up most of prehistoric life in Vizcaya, are of great value, since they allow us to know the chronological order of the culture of the primitive inhabitants.

The paintings are from the Magdalenian period, over 13,000 years ago. They are continuous or contour lines, using only black ink. Unfortunately they are currently closed to the public (the paintings only), given their state of deterioration.
