INFORMATION
From Bilbao, we can take the A-8 or the N-637 (which will take us through the Artxanda tunnels) heading towards Getxo. Both of these roads will link up with the BI-637 (La Avanzada road). Upon arrival in Getxo, the Uribe coastal road will take us to Sopelana.

Beschreibung

Impressive cliffs and wild beaches can be found all along the Sopelana coastline, constituting one of the most surprising parts of the Vizcaya coast, due to its natural richness and the beauty of its location. This peaceful and welcoming town is also an authentic paradise for anybody who wishes to combine sports and leisure, as we can carry out activities as wide-ranging as surfing, body boarding, paragliding, climbing and mountain biking.

But, without doubt, its four beaches are one of its main attractions. Barinatxe and La Salvaje, with their strong waves, attract numerous surfers. Nudism is practised in one end, and every year there is an international nudist race, which is now very much consolidated in the town. Arrietara is one of the most popular, and Atxabiribil, surrounded by cliffs, is open to the sea, whilst the nudist beach at Meñakoz is perhaps the most inaccessible and solitary.

Apart from the four beaches, it is worth taking the walk from Getxo to Sopelana, amongst the impressive cliffs, where many people practice airborne sports such as paragliding or hang-gliding. On the way we will discover interesting sites such as Aixerrota mill and Punta Galea lighthouse. It also has numerous green spaces, such as Iturrieta park, where we will find the renowned pond of La Ballena.

In addition to its undeniable natural beauty, there are also some buildings of architectural interest, such as the Renaissance church of San Pedro (16th century) with its beautiful Baroque tower, the Romanesque hermitage of San Andrés, with its seafaring details, the surrounding homesteads (an interesting example of popular architecture), and the outdoor sculptures found in the town, such as the one dedicated to surfers. Also worthy of mention are the prehistoric settlements in the surrounding area, including Kurtzio settlement, one of the oldest in Vizcaya.

Finally, with regards to celebrations, the main festivities in the town are those of San Pedro in June, Carmen in July and San Andrés in November. Nor should we forget the lively mediaeval fair which is held in August, which includes stalls, circus exhibitions, theatre acts, music...
