Past, present and future

Improvisation has managed to adapt to different periods, circumstances and social-cultural changes. South of the Bidasoa, one of the greatest tests was undoubtedly adapting to the new Basque society which was transformed from a rural society into an industrial and urban one. This transition was not without difficulty for improvisation and some were unable to adapt.

Amongst the innovators of the 20th century, we have to mention at least two extraordinary characters: Iñaki Eizmendi (Basarri) and Xabier Amuriza.

Basarri was the great champion at the first General Improvisation Championship in 1935 and since then, thanks to his intellectual rigour, quality competitions have regularly taken place. He also managed to make use of radio and the press for improvisation.

The contribution of Xabier Amuriza, forty years on, in how the subject is dealt with, the structure of the verse and the use of a refined and unified language, has been of major importance.

In addition to the work carried out by these two eminent bertsularis who have contributed to giving a true quality image to this ancient art, we must also add the studies carried out by researchers such as Manuel Lekuona, Antonio Zavala, Xanti Onaindia, Juan-Mari Lekuona, Juan San Martin, Piarres Lafitte, Jean Ithurriague, Alfonso Irigoien, José-Mari Aranalde, Jean Haritschelhar, Joanito Dorronsoro, and many others.

With regard to the future, improvisation will last as long as euskara, the Basque language,  survives. Improvisation is today rapidly developing and is taught both in Basque schools and as an extra-curricular activity.  There are many prizes and competitions in which hundreds of youngsters take part.
