BASQUE YOUTH: 9 and under

HELBURUA/GOAL.  To provide fun activities to get children together to socialize and foster a positive association with Basque organized activities.  Activities, for example, may be linked to seasons or holidays, but include some Basque vocabulary words, a song, background music, etc.  At the end of each session the child would have something to take home with them to hang on the refrigerator and to tell their family about, etc.

BETEZEA/IMPLEMENTATION.   The person[s] who will be responsible for making this happen are:

EGOERA/SITUATION.  Only a handful of clubs have active, kid-friendly programs underway.  If youth is the future, we need to provide clubs the means to offer opportunities for greater involvement.  Whereas NABO can provide specific programs directly to older kids (e.g., Udalkeu & Gaztealdi), these programs are being offered to local volunteers as possibilities.

2008 2009 2010 2011

Identify individuals who are working with children and ask them to share ideas

Gather resource materials for games and songs, etc.

Develop a short handbook explaining the aims of the program and providing tips on working with young children, positive reinforcement techniques, welcoming rituals, etc.  This will help volunteers who may not have this type of experience.

Develop 13 complete sessions

Identify local individuals who could volunteer to implement sessions in their clubs

Distribute 2 or 3 session packets to these volunteers

 - Follow up with volunteers and get feedback to consider in development for future packets

Distribute all packets developed up to this point

Assess needs with respect to variety of content for future packets

Develop 13 more session packets

Identify individuals who are working with children and ask them to share ideas; continue follow-up

Continue development of handbook

BETEZEA/IMPLEMENTATION.   The person[s] who will be responsible for making this happen are:

EGOERA/SITUATION. The following is some reworking of Udaleku so that each area focuses on the dances (although not exclusively) of a specific province.  A participant attending four years in a row would receive a full review of the dances from the seven provinces by the fourth year.
