PLAZA DANTZA: You too a dancer

Basque dance can be divided into many different categories; here we are a using a three-part categorization that includes:

Eliz dantza

These are dances for the Basque mass that opens most Basque-American festivals, that take place during the Offertory or Eucharistic prayer.  The three dances in this category include: Agurra (Erreberrentzia), Ezpata & Gorets.

Talde dantza

These are performance dances for rehearsed groups (usually of eight or more) of dancers with costumes and pre-rehearsed repertoire to perform at various events. NABO has a separate set of resources for these dances.  These dances are many and varied.  For more information visit
www.dantzariak.net

Plaza dantza

This final category is to get people to participate in the public dances the evenings of most Basque festivals. It is for this final category that NABO is preparing an instructional DVD.

Basque dances as we know them in America were initiated by immigrant Basques that brought with them not only specific Basque dances (e.g., the fandango/jota) but also adopted forms of dance that include the waltz, polka, etc.  The problem is that many have not been able to learn these dances.  The DVD will contain a step-by-step breakdown of basic steps.  There will also be an audio portion for people to play and practice with.  It will contain a handful of Basque specific dances and also how to waltz, polka, etc.  Let’s get more people dancing.  The more we dance together, the more fun we have.  The more fun we have, the more we enjoy Basque events.  The more we enjoy Basque events ….
