Cesar Bolivar Mendizabal: "Thanks to the World Pilota Council, plans are in the way to construct a fronton in Bolivia in 2008."

Cesar Bolivar Mendizabal is the President of the Bolivian Federation for pelota fronton. He is from Cochabamba, Bolivia and accompanied two pelota players from the province of Sacaba to play at the 2007 Euskal Pilota championship in South San Francisco, California. In this exclusive interview with EuskoSare, he talks about the future of pelota in Bolivia. Although Cesar is from Bolivia and speaks Spanish and Quechua (Native American language of South America), his roots come from the Basque Country. His grandparents came to Bolivia and were active pelota players. He passed on this tradition to his sons who are avid pelota players and hopes to spread pelota throughout his country of Bolivia.

Tell us about your views on pelota.

We must first look at the world of pelota from within our own country. So, for us, it’s quite challenging because we cannot count on international frontons (handball courts). We have frontons but they are “a la Boliviana.” They have three walls, two lateral ones and a frontis. So, our form of the game is very different to the one here. In order for us to keep up with this game of Basque pelota is a bit difficult and uncomfortable. For example, even the pelota itself is different. The pelota with which we play with is small, between 60-65 grams and when we come to participate in these international events, we have to play with a much bigger ball with weights of 105 grams. However, I have seen that the players we placed in this international event have been able to respond very well and I am very proud of our Bolivian players.

Has Bolivia participated in other international tournaments?

We have always tried to participate in all the international tournaments. What I appreciate the most now, and for which I applaud tremendously, is that the World Pilota Council has not only called upon the creation of tournaments and competitions, but the Council is supporting the actual spreading of the sport. From this point of view, we are very grateful for that.

How do you see the future of pelota in Bolivia?

I see a very promising future. In fact, thanks to the World Pilota Council, plans are in the way to construct a fronton in Bolivia in 2008. If we are going to have an international level fronton in Bolivia, the number of players will skyrocket just based on the number of players that we already have in Bolivia. In actuality, 1,400 players are affiliated with the Bolivian Federation.

Manex Errenteria: "Now we are opening the doors of the Eusko Etxea to all Venezuelans, so that we can continue to have new blood.”"

Manex Errenteria, from the Centro Vasco de Caracas, Venezuela came to South San Francisco, California to play Paleta Cuero.

An avid Pelota Cuero and Pala Goma player, Manex started playing pelota thirteen years ago at his local Basque center, practicing with friends and competing in games on Sundays. Manex expressed his satisfaction and amazement with the tournament in South San Francisco. In addition, he learned about the situation of various countries around the world that play pelota. Manex stated, “I didn’t realize that a pelota court existed in South San Francisco. From what I have learned, there are a lot of pelota courts that exist. Now, we just need more players to get motivated to play.”

He loves the world of pelota and feels that although a lot has been lost due to many different reasons, but tournaments such as this one can give a lot of life to the game. Recently when he traveled to the Basque Country for training. He realized that there are so many specialties being played and and how important they are. Manex stated, “In my country, we have gotten rid of having exclusively Basque people play the game. In the past, there were always plenty of Basques around to play the game. However, now we are opening the doors of the Eusko Etxea to all Venezuelans, so that we can continue to have new blood.”

One Wall Handball: Creating an International Connection
2007-09-20 07:57
Egilea: Idoya Urruty

Tom O'Connor is the International Officer for the Irish Handball Council in Ireland. He attended the Euskal Pilota Txapelketa in South San Francisco. He shared with EuskoSare his thoughts on the use of the one-wall version of handball as a unifying bridge between handball and those sports to which it bears similarities such as Basque Pelota.

Tom, how did you get involved in Basque pelota?
A couple of years ago I was contacted by the Basques, particularly by Oskar Rekalde. He wanted to come to Ireland and see if some connection could be made between Irish handball and the Basque pelota. He came and viewed our national championships. We got together and talked about various things. There were two different games, but we needed to come to some kind of compromise between the two. The Irish team visited the Basque Country and played the hard ball pelota. The Basques are very, very strong, probably too strong for us. But then we have another game at home which is a very simplified version of pelota handball played against one wall. This is very successful in America in that it can be played outside, it can be played by very young people, in parks and at no cost to setup. This is very successful and this is what we have started to play in Ireland. It has now spread to France and Italy. It is called “one walled handball.”

How have the Basques faired at the one-walled handball?
The Basque people that came to Ireland saw that this was a very good game. They had two days practice and then beat all the Irish at the games. This caused amazement at home because we have been playing for hundreds of years. Suddenly these guys come and play and they were terrific! They came to the world championship and they entered the B division and won it very easily. The A division was won by the Americans. They went to Edmonton last year and again they won singles and doubles in the second division and again gave good games; the Americans won the first division which we didn’t.

What are some of the benefits of promoting one walled handball?
We think it is a great method of introducing pelota and our handball to different cultures and people because we can start at very simple steps. It costs nothing and players get used to hitting the ball with their hands. If they get very good at it, they can move onto the proper indoor courts. It provides a pool for which the interest and talents can be found.

Why do you think it's so important to introduce Basque pelota and Irish handball to different cultures?
I see it as a way to build a future for handball in Ireland, England, and all over the country and here in the United States as well. I think it will be good for pelota, especially for poorer countries such as Bolivia for example, as well as other countries in Europe. If you build a court like this in Bolivia, it’s pointless because few can play, they don’t know how to do it. If you start from the very simplified version, then the children get used to that, and then you can move onto something like this. That is my idea and that is what I have been pushing in Europe. In Europe at the moment we have something like seven countries in the last five years that have taken up the game. Next month we go to Italy. There will be a tournament there between France, Italy, Belgium, Holland, Ireland, and England. It’s going to be terrific. Because they each have their own version of their game, just a common modality, the games can be very, very close and that gets very exciting. We think it would be very good for both their own games and for making an international connection. With this idea of a common chord, it gives a connection. Next year we will have a Europeon championship, and we are going to have that every three years. Perhaps next year it will be in the Basque Country or Italy.

What are your thoughts on the Basque Pilota Championship here at the Basque Cultural Center in South San Francisco?
I was very impressed with the facilities, organisation, and standard of play. There is much in the set up that we can use in our Federation. Most satisfying was the fact I was made to feel part of the family and everyone was so friendly. It was an experience I will always remember.

Future of Pelota in Chile
2007-09-15 05:42
Egilea: Idoya Urruty

Danik Arana and Miguel Ramirez of the Centro Vasco of Santiago, Chile have come to South San Francisco, California to participate in the Euskal Pilota Txapelketa in Paleta Cuero.

Both Basque Chileans were inspired by their fathers, who actually play together. They would take them to the Centro Vasco in Chile and teach them to play. However, not many people have an opportunity to be exposed to the game as these young men were. There are few canchas in Chile and few people that actually play the sport. Danik recalls his amazement at the number of canchas that exist in Argentina. “There are around 6,000 canchas in Argentina and only about four or five in Chile,” Danik stated. He emphasized that "These type of events are extremely important in order for people to participate and see how the games are played."

Miguel’s father, who is from La Rioja, began showing his son pilota approximately twenty years ago, mostly in trinquete goma. He is best in trinquete goma. In regards to the future of pelota in Chile, Miguel stated that one of their challenges is that there are no young people who are playing the game. “We play with people who are in their fifties and above. So there is no real competition. It’s hard for us to see a future in pelota for this reason.” Miguel has participated in championship games since 1995.

In regards to the level of skills in this tournament, Miguel stated that “Euskal Herria’s level is excellent. Unlike some of the other countries, we do not primarily play Paleta Cuero, so some specialties are missing. Paleta Cuero and Handball are played so much more in the Basque Country.”

The future of people depends on the future players. During a recent trip to Durango, Bizkaia, they had the opportunity to receive teacher training in which now plans for starting up a school to get kids engaged will soon begin. There are some kids that are interested, so only time will tell.

Dena den, erritmo bizian jokatutako lehian gehiago izan dira eta merezita atera dute partidua aurrera.

La pareja de Asegarce ha cumplido los pronósticos en la primera semifinal del OPEN aunque no sin apreturas. The Asegarce team did their job well in the first semifinal OPEN. When the Euskal Herria players caught up at 17-16, some worries did surface, but then there was lots of rhythm in the game.

Mal partido el que ha servido como segunda semifinal femenina. Se esperaba mucho por parte de las mexicanas pero en ningún momento han dado la talla y han allanado el camino de las vascas a la final.

This second women's semifinal game was mediocre. A lot more was expected from the Mexicans but they didn't show their capabilities and they opened the road for the Basques to enter the finals.
