Anne Etchegoyen’s San Francisco leg of her California Dreamin’ tour began yesterday morning at the ceremony for the 40th anniversary of the Lycee Francais Laperouse and the grand opening of the Lycee’s new Ortega campus, located in San Francisco’s sunset district. After a brief introduction by the Lycee’s headmaster, Frédérick Arzelier, Anne sang a stirring rendition of the Marseillaise, the national anthem of France. After a string of speeches by local dignitaries and representatives of the French government, Anne wrapped up the ceremony by singing her hit single “Ici ou la-bas”, and was accompanied by her guitarist Philippe Barennes. The kids in attendance got into the act as they waived their arms in the air to the rhythm of this song. After the ceremony, Anne was greeted by new fans asking for CDs and her autograph!
Anne’s special appearance at the Lycee’s 40th anniversary was fitting as the Lycee was founded in 1967 by mainly Basque and Béarnaise families.
Later in the afternoon, Anne gave a concert for the children at Notre Dame des Victoires School, located in San Francisco’s China Town district.
Anne’s next concert will be a special performance Friday night, at the Notre Dame des Victoires church, which is open to the public.
The Basque Educational Organization (BEO) of San Francisco, California, has organized a special California concert tour by renowned Basque singer, Anne Etchegoyen.
Anne Etchegoyen has today made the voice of the Basque Country a feminine one. In this country of male voices, Anne has brought a fresh wind to the world of Basque song. She started at the age of eight in the local youth chorus of her home town of Donapaleu (Baxenabarre). After many Basque song contests, numerous concerts and “kantaldi”, a musical Basque comedy, several years at the musical conservatory of Baiona and Bordeaux studying classic song, she was selected to sing the French national anthem at the opening ceremony of the Athletic Championships at the Stadium of France in 2003.
Anne’s latest CD, Otentik, was released in 2005 and her next CD is due out this summer. Otentik is mainly made up of Basque songs with a few in French and Castilian, the three languages of Euskal Herria. The Basque songs are a mixture of contemporary ones and traditional ones with a classical arrangement, accompanied by acoustic instruments, which are primarily the piano, guitar and violin. A couple of the tracks were recorded with the all male chorus of Adiskideak and were recorded in the church in the Basque coastal village of Bidarte (Lapurdi). In December of 2006 Anne recorded a few tracks on a Basque Christmas CD with the all male chorus of Aizkoa. Far from stereotypical, Anne Etchegoyen captivates you with her extraordinary voice, her interpretations and stage presence.
