Dismissal of Josu Legarreta, various Delegates of Euskadi and other positions in the Basque Government

During its routine Tuesday meeting, the Basque Government’s council approved the letting go of various appointments in the area of the Lehendakaritza, all of which will be publically announced in the Official Bulletin this coming Friday. The posts involved are all part of the General Secretariat of Foreign Actions, whose head, Iñaki Aguirre, was dismissed two weeks ago.

Basque Festival season has begun in the US, with the 2009 NABO Convention scheduled for Reno in July

This weekend it is Bakersfield’s turn, and the one before that was Los Banos’s and before that it was Fresno’s turn to hold an annual Basque picnic. As each year, the month of May begins the Basque festival season in the US that spans the west, lasting until October with festivals in Las Vegas, Nevada and Rocklin, California. The main celebration will take place July 24-26 in Reno with the celebration of the NABO convention and festival, details of which are forthcoming in another article. You can download 'To know the Basque Country', a book to guiding your knowledge of the Basques

The Basque Government has published, through the Department of Culture, the book "To know the Basque Country", a work that is intented to be used as a manual for immigrants and Diaspora Basques to better know the diverse aspects of the Basque Culture. The book has been published into the principle languages of the locals, immigration, the Diaspora, and for tourism (Basque, Spanish, English, French, Chinese, Arabic, and Romanian) and topics like the culture, language, society, values, institutions, economy, and the political system of government are discussed. The Basque Government has published the first 12,000 copies, but you can also download the whole book from www.euskadi.net. The authors are Ramon Zallo and Mikel Ayuso.

They helped shape Basque communities in the West and even though they passed this year they are remembered

The Boise Omenaldia Mass, first celebrated in 1996, was started as a way to honor the lives of Basque who have gone before us. From that first mass, it has become a way for an entire community to pray together for those who have died. This year 50 people were remembered with a mass at Sacred Heart Church in Boise. White candles adorned with red and green ribbon were given to family members to light in honor of the deceased, and as always, three female dancers performed San Juan.

The summer is over and the Oinkari Basque Dancers of Boise, Idaho, are ready to strap on their dancing shoes and start practicing again. Some new members started practicing Sunday September 16th and others will start Sunday September 23rd. Then it’s time to start dancing with the professionals. As explained on their website, 'Through the art of traditional Basque dance, we, the Oinkari Basque Dancers of Boise, Idaho, share our culture with our local and global community while continuing to preserve our unique heritage for future generations.'

Juan Mari Beltran: An accomplished Basque musician makes a stop during his North American Tour in Boise

Boiseans enjoyed a night on the Basque Block with entertainment from an accomplished Basque Musician, Juan Mari Beltran. Beltran has taught music for many years in the Basque Country, he has recorded several albums, and introduced antique instruments back into the world of popular music. Beltran and his band of multiple musicians are part of a cultural tour made possible by help from the Basque Autonomous Government of Euskadi and several American Basque Communities. This particular tour includes the cities of Boise, Seattle and Vancouver.
