Scholarships for Study
at the University of Nevada, Reno
Three scholarships are available each academic year for students to attend the University of Nevada, Reno. Each scholarship has varying requirements (please see descriptions below). Applicants must register as full-time students at the University, and must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75. Each scholarship offers a minimum award of $500 ($250 per semester) up to around $1,000. Applications are available on this site, and from high school scholarship offices within the state of Nevada. The same application may be used for all three scholarships.
In 1995, a scholarship was established in memory of Dolores Saval Trigero, the daughter of immigrants from the Basque Country in Spain. Born and raised in Nevada, Dolores Trigero displayed a strong interest in her Basque heritage and was a strong advocate of the personal, social, and cultural benefits of a college education. The Dolores Saval Trigero Scholarship is awarded to a Nevada resident of Basque descent, preferably from a rural area of the state.
The Peter Echeverria Scholarship is also a memorial endowment that was awarded for the first time for the 2002–2003 academic year. Peter Echeverria had a distinguished thirty-year legal career in Nevada. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in June 1999, recognizing his career as one of the finest trial lawyers in the country. He also served in the Nevada Senate and on the Nevada Gaming Commission. This scholarship is awarded to a Nevada student, preferably of Basque descent.
These scholarships were established as memorial funds, and we thank the Trigero and Echeverria families for their generosity and thoughtfulness in designating these funds for the benefit of Basque-American students. Eskerrik asko!
