Hikers in the mountains of the Far West have long known about mysterious carvings found on aspen trees - names and initials, dates, phrases in several languages, even human and animal figures - but few have questioned their intent or significance. Historian Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe has spent over a decade recording and and studying these arborglyphs, which were largely the work of Basque sheepherders. This website features many of these carvings.
