Welcome to the web site of the Center for Basque Studies of the University of Nevada, Reno. If you are interested in Basque research, news, diaspora, women, studies abroad, culture... this is your site.

We are primarily a research center. Our mission is to conduct and publish Basque-related research. Anthropology, history, women’s studies, cultural studies, literature, bibliography, and lexicography have thus far been our main fields of research. Topics on which we have written include: migration, nationalism, women and literature, ethnographies of Basque society, political violence, and the international discourse of terrorism. We have also produced a Basque/English, English/Basque dictionary.

Instruction is also part of our mission. We offer a minor in Basque studies and a tutorial Ph.D., and are in the process of developing a group of online courses. The first several courses -- Basque Culture; Elementary Basque I and II; Museums, Architecture, City Renewal; Modern Basque History; The Basque Economy; Basque Language, Society, and Culture -- are already available. If you are interested in a study-abroad program, one of our staff members directs the University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) which sends students to many countries around the globe, including the Basque region.

We have an extensive Basque library collection -- approximately 50,000 volumes and 1,500 journal titles -- which is electronically cataloged and Internet-accessible. You can borrow many of these materials on interlibrary loan.

We are committed to using the new technologies of the Internet for furthering Basque research, instruction, and information in an increasingly global world. We are working on several new and exciting projects: online courses, a comprehensive web site, new conferences, an extensive Basque database, as well as an oral history of Basque diaspora communities.

If any of these areas concerns you, please feel free to contact us with inquiries, ideas, projects, encouragement, criticisms, or suggestions. We would love to hear from you.
