The sculpture Orreaga by Nestor Basterrechea is displayed in the
lobby of Getchell Library at the University of Nevada, Reno. It is on
loan to the University from José Ramón Cengotitabengoa and Gema
Egaña de Cengotitabengoa.
A three-piece sculpture entitled In Search of
Equilibrium - VIII was donated to the Center by the artist, Mikel
Lertxundi, who visited Reno in summer of 1990 to prepare and open an
exhibit of works inspired by the Western U.S. Lertxundi describes the
world as three concentric circumferences: in the nucleus, molten iron; on
the crust, stone; and finally, vegetation or wood. He works with these
three fundamental elements to achieve a harmonious balance honoring
nature.
Lertxundi also created a sculpture in 1994, Path of
Equilibrium, for the Reno City Hall. Again, Lertxundi used the main
elements of the earth for his materials: stone (granite from Nevada), wood
(oak from California) and iron. The 9 x 6 x 6-foot sculpture, in its
composition and materials, is designed to reflect the life processes of
birth, life, and death.
