"Pioneers of Translation" collection

It’s been a long time since EIZIE committed itself with the task of bringing back to life the works of writers and translators from past generations, in recognition of their contribution. This new collection, Itzultzaile aitzindariak (pioneers of translation), is the result of that initiative.

So far three translations have been published in this collection, with the collaboration of CEDRO, and Inazio Mujika, a writer and editor himself, has been in charge of all editions: Dickens’ “Eguarri abestia” (The Christmas Carol), translated into Basque in 1921 by Luzear; Schiller’s “Wilhelm Tell”, translated in 1934 by Inazio Goenaga; and P.B. Kyne’s “Garailea” (The Go-Getter). Mr. Mujika has selected and revised the texts, written the introduction and prepared a brief glossary of dialectal words (it is to be noted that unification of the Basque language was not attained until 1968; therefore, the texts that have been published are the original translations, in the three cases, into the Gipuzkoan dialect).
