COFRADÍA DE MAREANTES DE SAN PEDRO

Description

Description

The importance of the Fishermen's and Seamen's Guild in the municipal life of Elantxobe is enormous, due to the importance of the fishing industry and the many people who engage in fishing.

Since its creation, possible after the settling of the fishermen in the port, and until 1770, the revenues of the port and parish of Ibarranguelua were united, but during that year both parts reached an agreement for “each to make the most of itsown, and comply with their respective obligations”.

Following this separation, the economic situation of the Guild was not especially buoyant and in 1781, it was forced to ask the town council of Ibarranguelua to build two docks, which meant incurring a huge debt. In 1832, faced with this problem of debt and considering that most of the blame lay on the poor administration of the guild by incompetent people, the post of treasurer was established.

During that same year, the separation with Ibarranguelua took place..

The Guild's debt situation was worsened when the port was enlarged in 1869 and it came to an agreement with the town council of Elantxobe, given its precarious economic situation.

The Guild's economic situation continued to be precarious until the end of the century, as is shown by the council's response, in 1899, to a request made for a new weather observatory, and the visible decadence of the Guild finally ended in it disappearing altogether.

The social importance of the Guild is evident in the many functions it exercises. The guilids acted in the waters bathing their coasts based on their own jurisdiction through their statutes, indicating the limits within which the fishermen could fish, the prohibitions on boats from other ports, etc.

They established the labour relations between boat-owner and fisherman, in such a way that if a fisherman had promised a fishing master that he would fish in his boat all the year round, he was not allowed to go out in any other boat, and neither could the master dismiss that fisherman unless this was by agreeent, and after paying him his wages.

The Guild had its fish market where the fish was sold, in the town centre.

All the fishermen were obliged to take the fresh fish to the market in order to sell it, and the “mayordomo” was responsible for selling it, and elected every year for the position by public bid. A series of payments were deducted from the sale, that were paid to the Guild. These amounts varied depending on the time of year and the needs in question.
