The gift of the sea

The Basque Country maintains close ties with the sea and fishing. Marine communities have always existed along the Basque coast, creating a unique culture and lifestyle.

Fish is an essential part of our diet, as it provides us with nutrients, some of which are not found in other foods, and plays a crucial role in preventing and treating different illnesses. There are many different ways of preparing it and including it our diet.

From time immemorial, fish derivatives have added a fundamental supply of proteins to our diet. This has led to the development of fish farms, even in external waters and far-off fishing places. Fishing is therefore a traditional activity that has developed over time, and the Basque Country is currently one of the most important fishing areas in Europe.

Apart from its nutritional virtues and the deep roots it has in our culture, fish generates considerable economic activity.

The Basque fishing fleet is formed by some 450 boats. It consists of the shallow fleet (artisan fleet that operates in nearby fishing areas), fresh deep-water fishing fleet, cod fleet, tuna fish fleet and the fleet that catches fish for deep freezing.

The active Basque fishing population numbers some 6,000 persons. Their contribution to the Spanish Fishing Product is 10%. Approximately 12% of all Spanish canning industries are found in the Basque Country.
