NABO Update

The Fall 2012 NABO meeting was hosted by Mountain Home’s Euskal Lagunak club, who showed that great things can come in small packages. The membership of Euskal Lagunak provided a terrific experience from a fantastic facility, outstanding meals, wonderful entertainment, and most importantly a productive and important meeting.

Many key issues were discussed and voted on. NABO increased its overall membership to 44 clubs with their inclusion of Boise State University’s Basque Studies Program. David Lachiondo gave a comprehensive report of where the Basque Studies Program started, where it is now, and the optimistic future that it is working toward.

Udaleku 2012 was discussed with impressive praise toward all the hard work of Gina Urquidi, Ana Mendiola and Miren Lete; their outstanding crew, and the Boise Basque community. It was agreed that Boise set the bar at an all new high for others to aspire to. It was also finalized that Udaleku 2013 will be held in Bakersfield next summer.

The 2012 International Mus championship was a huge success with everyone enjoying an Alaskan cruise vacation that many described as a once in a lifetime experience. The USA was well represented with a third place finish, with the winning team from France. Next year’s tournament will be held in Chile.

In the pilota world, our own Edu Sarria and Jeremy Malone were recognized for winning the handball finals held in Elko this summer.

NABO is promoting 2012-2013 as the year of the Basque Youth. All clubs were asked to try new ideas to encourage their local youth to be more involved in their Basque culture. It was great to hear many of the clubs wanting to incorporate many of the ideas that Euzkaldunak and the Oinkaris have been doing for many years.

Lastly, John Ysursa was recognized for the outstanding job that he has done as NABO’s Facilitator. Applications were reviewed and after much discussion Kate Camino from Reno was chosen as the new Facilitator. She will work with John toward a smooth transition.

The next NABO meeting will be held on February 2, 2013, and hosted by the Basque Club of Utah. For any questions regarding NABO, use the contact information below.
