Basque Rock

Today joining the Xalbadors, the Axulars, pilota and dance, are the Niko Etxarts, Anje Duhaldes, Mixel Ducaus, Fermin Muguruzas, who are fully woven into the fabric of Basque culture. Since Etxart’s “Euskal rock’n’roll” in the early 70’s, the youth of that time decided that euskara (Basque language) would be accompanied by an electric guitar or sampler. And since then, it has become a genuine musical style, which has continuously evolved, producing its own legends and touching all sectors of the population in the Basque Country.

Youth from diverse backgrounds (urban coast to the rural interior of Euskal Herria) are surrounded by this contemporary music. They search for different things: Some are in search of their cultural orientation; some find their weekly escape; and others identify with the engaging message carried in the music. But it seems clear that for these youths, who have little in common, Basque Rock represents common ground, which is exemplified by the well attended annual rock music festival held in Xiberoa.

The Bands

The Basque Educational Organization has partnered with the Boise Basque Center and the Basque Government, to bring Basque Rock to San Francisco & Boise. Two of the Basque Country’s premiere rock acts will be showcased, each playing their distinctive genres of Basque Rock:

BETAGARRI of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque province of Araba), is an eight piece SKA-Rock band, that have been playing together for the past thirteen years and have produced seven albums. Their high energy live shows have made them a popular attraction in Europe & Japan.

BERRI TXARRAK of Lekunberri (Basque province of Nafarroa) have been playing together for ten years and have produced four albums, with a constant evolution that blends alternative rock, punk, metal and some amazing melodies. Singing in euskara, Berri Txarrak has become one of the best rock bands in the Basque Country. Their 4th album, called "LIBRE (c)" was distinguished as best album in Spain by Rock Sound magazine. Berri Txarrak’s highly emotive, fresh and energetic songs with clever poetic lyrics convey a clear socio-political conscience from a reflexive point of view. The band has recorded their 5th album, which was mixed this summer in Kansas by American producer Ed Rose, and will be released later in October.

“Berri Txarrak is simply one of the best rock acts on the planet.” - David Cox - music journalist
