The London Basque Society has organized children’s playgroup in Basque as of January

London’s Euskal Etxea will begin the year with a new project: creating the “Euskal Playgroup,” a group of games for children where members children can get together, play and relate to others their age in Basque. The idea came from the parents themselves and will begin in January. Anyone who would like their children to participate should contact the London Basque Society.

Coinciding with the end of the year, from North Eastern Argentina, the Kotoiaren Lurra Basque club in Chaco communicates the publication of issue 11 of Erakin, published in paper and dealing with various topics on current Basque history and culture, in Europe as well as in Chaco and Argentina. The new issue has maintained the format of its predecessors and commemorates the 500 anniversary of the conquest of the Kingdom of Navarre on its cover, and includes an article on the subject authored by Cesar Arrondo.

Application deadline opens tomorrow for 2013 Basque club grants

The Official Bulletin of the Basque Country was published today complete with the official call for Basque club 2013 grants, officially marking the application period. This year, the total allotted to these grants is 1,234,667 Euros, of which 934,667 Euros will be allocated to Chapter V or Activities and Operation, and 300,000 to Chapter VII, or Infrastructure. The deadline to apply is February 28.

After the swearing in of the new Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, last Saturday in Gernika, the new administration is gradually taking shape. The eight counselors (ministers) of the new cabinet have been named, and they will take over their positions on Monday. Yesterday, the first Governing Council, presided by Urkullu, took place at Ajuria-Enea. During the same, the first appointments were conducted in each department along with the cessation of charges of the previous administration, including those of the current Secretary General of Foreign Action, Guillermo Echenique, and the Director of Basque Communities, Julian Celaya, who published their farewell letters, to Basque Communities yesterday.

Murcia’s Basque club, in Spain, celebrated a Cultural Weekend last December 14-16 with activities like poesy and musical recitals, a Christmas dinner complete with a visit from the Olentzero and a tortilla championship. The events were very well received and were attended by people from the literary worlds and the University as well as younger generations, reflecting a moment of regeneration and revitalization in the club. The club’s ever growing presence on social networks is also another example of this.

On Saturday night the Euskal Etxea of New York was converted into a nightclub to celebrate its first Gayaldi. Not even the bad weather, it rained all night long, nor the cancelation of subway service that goes to the Basque club made a dent in the dozens of people who went to the Basque club to attend the first Gayaldi. Many made their way to the Greenpoint neighborhood in Brooklyn not wanting to miss this historic event in the life of the New York Basque club. The DJ Ron Like Hell, go-go boys Rowan and David, that didn’t stop dancing all night long, added a festive note to an unforgettable evening that will be continued in future editions.

The Lima, Peru Basque club filled with members and friends to celebrate the International Day of Euskera on December 3, as well as the feast of San Francisco Javier. Raul Noblecilla, club president, recalled that the Euskera Day festivities coincide with that of one of the most universal Basques, the Basque saint who traveled to missions in India, Malaysia, Japan and China. The Basque-Peruvian festivities included a performance by the club’s choir and ended with a dinner attended by many.

As announced on EuskalKultura.com, an important tribute took place in Bragado, Argentina from November 21-25, to the tenor Florencio Constantino (1889-1919). Among the centennial events of the theater that bears his name, it should be noted that the building was re-inaugurated as a cultural center and that the singer’s remains were relocated to the mausoleum constructed for the occasion. The commemoration, that gathered authorities from the Basque Country and Argentina, involved the entire community. The local Danak Anaiak Basque club was also in involved in the celebration and was one of those in charge of relocating Constantino’s remains that are now sheltered by the Basque and Argentine flags.

While this year’s activities are coming to a close, Zelaiko Euskal Etxea in La Pampa has already announced those for 2013

A special program of activities has been carried out this year at the Basque club in Santa Rosa as part of their 20 anniversary. Among these include the last event organized by the club where they paid tribute to two local artists who are of Basque descent. The Basques in Santa Rosa began the farewell to 2012 with music by Lalo Molina Larrazabal and Carlos de Urquiza, a farewell that will continue through December 14 with the presentation of book by a club member. As the result of a proposal that will enter into force tomorrow November 30, feast of Saint Andrew, the patron saint of the Navbarrese town of Lizarra, the headquarters shared by the publisher Ekin and the Basque Cultural Center, Eusketxe, will be renamed Lizarraenea. The choice of this name was very significant for friends and authorities in both institutions that share the locale on Mexico Street since Andres de Irujo, the founder of this publishing house and Basque culture referent in Argentina was born in Lizarra. The ceremony will take place on December 1 at 9pm in Lizarraenea, at 1880 Mexico Street, Buenos Aires.
