Women have played an important role in cultural process and the construction of nations. This is evident in rites and mythology. The role of women and their secret societies was also an important phenomenon in ancient rural Basque civilisation. Within this framework, women are symbolised as crafters of time and weavers of existence, a labyrinth of alternative roads and possibilities. Thus the web of female ancestors (“amama-sare”) is woven. With the SARE meetings, Emakunde wishes to pay tribute to all the women who went before us, and create new networks aimed at weaving space and time for equality.
