2005 Arborglyph Study Set

Boise, Idaho - - - The Basque Arborglyph project is a partnership with the Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies and the Basque Museum and Cultural Center to promote the legacy of the “Euskaldunak” people in Idaho. The Cenarrusa Center, with a grant from the Idaho Humanities Council, brought in Dr. Joxe Mallea-Olaexte from the University of Nevada–Reno to help volunteers locate and record the names, drawings, and thoughts of Basque herders on the Boise NF from the early 1900s to the present day.

This year we will continue the work started last summer. Our focus will be the upper South Fork Boise River watershed on the Boise and Sawtooth NFs, where there is a long history of traditional use by the sheep industry. Dr. Mallea-Olaexte and representatives from Idaho’s Basque community will join us again for the project.

The program will run from August 8–13. Applications are due by June 15. Minimum age is 18 and you must be in good physical condition and able to hike steep terrain for extended periods, as we will be 1–5 miles from the vehicles during the day; photography and drawing skills helpful but not required

You may contact John Bieter at the email address below to participate or provide assistance, or can apply for one of the 6 Forest Services positions go to the following URL:
