2005 Jaialdi Symposium



Boise, Idaho - - - The Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies in conjunction with Boise State University will host the 2005 Jaialdi Symposium on July 27 and July 29, 2005. The symposium is dedicated to bringing people together to discuss common issues and challenges for the Basque people. Presentations conducted in cooperation with Boise State University, BSU Center for Idaho History and Politics, University of Nevada Reno Center for Basque Studies, the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies.

Wednesday, July 27, 2005 programs:

• 11:45AM to 2:30PM - Basque Studies Program Inauguration and Reception at Boise State University for special guests and press. Guests will gather in the foyer of the Boise State Student Union Building at 11:45AM where BSU Provost Sona Andrews will welcome the Lehendakari Juan Jose Ibarretxe and the delegation from the Basque Government.

The reception will follow in the Lookout Room at the BSU Student Union Building. The new Basque Studies Program at Boise State University will be introduced accompanied by comments from Sona Andrews, Pete Cenarrusa and Miren Azkarate, the Basque Government Minister of Culture. The highlight of the reception will be the signing of a new Memorandum of Agreement between BSU, the Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies and the Basque Government, followed by comments from Lehendakari Juan Jose Ibarretxe.

• 3:30 to 4:30PM - Afternoon Program at the Egyptian Theater in downtown Boise:

- Welcome and introductions: Dr. John Bieter
- "Musika ta Lurra" (Music from the Land) by Dr. John Ysursa

• 7:00PM - Evening Program at the Egyptian Theater in downtown Boise:

- Welcome and introductions: Joseba Chertudi
- Comments by the Honorable Pete T. Cenarrusa
- Inaugural Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies Laia Award presentations

Keynote address by Dr. Joseba Zulaika
"Moving from Gernika to Boise, from Santimamiñe to Bilbao: We are all Basques and Amerikanuak"

• 2:30PM to 5:00PM - Afternoon Program at Boise City Hall in the Foothills Room:

- "Speaking Through the Aspens: Basque Tree Carvings in the America West" presented by Dr. Joxe Mallea from the University of Nevada Reno.

- "Iparralderen Egoera: Cultural Challenges in the French Basque Country" presented by Mr. Pantxoa Etchegoin, Director, Euskal Kultur Erakundea.

The Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies (CCBS) was founded in 2003 to preserve, educate and connect the Basque community and the rest of the world through research, projects and educational opportunities for all. The Cenarrusa Center is a joint project between educators, business and cultural groups from the Basque community in Boise, Idaho and works with Boise's Basque Museum and Cultural Center.
