Basque Culture Day


The Basque Educational Organization will be hosting a Basque Culture Day on Saturday, October 6th, 2007, 1:00pm, at the San Francisco Basque Cultural Center.

This year's Basque Culture Day will explore the varying Basque immigration experiences, as described by authors from the Basque Government's landmark series URAZANDI, which compiles the immigration history of the most important Basque Clubs all over the world.  The following authors will be participating:

Dr. Gloria Totoricaguena, director of the Center for Basque Studies at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Dr. Totoricaguena has authored three of the current 16 volumes of the Urazandi series: Volume 1 (Basque Diaspora Comparison), Volume 3 (Boise), Volume 12 (New York), and will be adding a new volume for Australia this year. (1:00pm & 4:20pm)

Dr. Xabier Irujo of the Center for Basque Studies, University of Nevada, Reno.  Dr. Irujo with Alberto Irigoyen won the prestigious Andrés de Irujo award, granted annually by the Basque Government recognizing works that best contribute to awareness of the Basque Diáspora, for their book La Sociedad de Confraternidad Vasca Euskal Erria (The Society of Basque Brotherhood Euskal Erria). The book was nominated by the Basque Center Euskal Erria of Montevideo, and will be published as part of the Urazandi series as the second volume dedicated to the Basque community of Uruguay.

The work deals with the foundation and history of this pro-Basque organization and its significance within the Basque community of Uruguay. Alberto Irigoyen, of Uruguay, and Xabier Irujo, descendant of the same Irujo family and born as well in the Venezuelan diáspora, have taken another step in their fruitful collaboration, after last month’spresentation of another book entitled La Hora Vasca de Uruguay (Uruguay’s Basque Hour - 3:10pm)

Dr. Pedro Oiarzabal of the University of Nevada, Reno.  Dr. Oiarzabal is currently working on the new Urazandi volume for San Francisco, and is the author, with his brother Agustin, of the book La Identidad Vasca en el Mundo.   (1:30pm)

Argitxu Camus Etchecopar, Basque Studies Ph.D. Student at the University of Nevada, Reno.  Ms. Camus has authored volume 10 (Paris) of the Urazandi series, and is currently working on a new volume on the history of the North American Basque Organization (NABO - 2:15pm).

The day will culminate with a dinner show featuring the renowned Basque singer, Anne Etchegoyen, who is from Donapaleu (St. Palais), Baxenabarre, and who sings traditional Basque songs with classical arrangements, accompanied by guitar and piano.
