Euskal Herria and the Diaspora are getting ready to celebrate Aberri Eguna, as every year, the celebration coincides with Easter Sunday (this year March 27). Basque clubs like those in Madrid, Caracas and New York, to name a few, never miss this celebration.  Other places that will celebrate include Lima, Santiago, Vancouver, Mexico, Sydney, London, Havana or Sao Paulo, and of course several places in Argentina (see separate article).

The Basque Fest Festival will fill Bilbao with Basque music, art, culture and food during Holy Week

For the fourth year in a row, the Basque Fest Festival will transform Bilbao into the scene of a great celebration of Basque culture, much like Jaialdi in Boise or NABO Conventions in the US, or Semana Vasca in Argentina, with a huge program of activities, more than 140.  The event is dedicated to visitors who come during Holy Week, as well as to the locals with concerts, exhibitions of Herri Kirolak (rural sports), theater, dances and expositions, as well as a txoko dedicated to Basque food and its quality products.

The Eusko Etxea in New York will celebrate Aberri Eguna in memory of Patxi Bazurto

Francisco Bazurto's death has been a deep blow for many members and directors of EENY

The death last Sunday, in a car accident, of member Francisco Bazurto was quite a blow for many members of the institution that is the little big family of the Eusko Etxea of New York.  Another Basque, visiting from the Basque Country is in critical condition.  After thinking about it, the EENY has decided to go ahead with next Sunday’s Aberri Eguna celebration, but with a different format dedicated to these two.  Patxi’s funeral will take place on Thursday in Queens.

Recently retired Jai Alai player Juan Mari Fundazuri will no longer be the Union representative, without a new name on the table

Juan Mari Fundazuri has quit as the Pelotari's Union Representative (UAW-IJAPA), after retiring from professional sports on January 13th. As he told EuskalKultura.com, “the union has not chosen a new representative yet, but I guess they will soon.” Fundazuri has mixed feelings about his new reality and doesn't forget that the sport's future is still in a compromised situation, even though Florida's House of Representatives has again postponed the decision about whether to allow Frontons to install slot machines−their most important game to date.

The solidarity project is part of the activities that are being developed as part of the sister-city relationship that has existed between the Argentine City and the town in Gipuzkoa for the last 16 years.  The material received, a load of approximately 20,000 kilos, will be distributed not only in the Greater Buenos Aires but also at receiving center in the northwest of the country in Jujuy, Salta and Tucuman.
