Basque License Plates Now Available in March 2006

The Governor of Idaho Authorizes the Creation of a Basque-themed License Plate to be Available January 2006.
La propuesta para la creación de placas de matrículas especiales en homenaje a la herencia cultural vasca ha superado el último trámite --la firma del gobernador del Estado-- y ya es oficial. A partir del 1 de enero de 2006 los ciudadanos de Idaho que así lo soliciten podrán seleccionar para sus autos una matrícula especial representativa de la comunidad vasca del estado. El diputado idahoense Carlos Bilbao, impulsor de la ley, acompañó al gobernador Kempthorne en el acto de firma del decreto, junto a Pete Cenarrusa, ex-secretario de estado, Ben Ysursa, actual secretario de estado de Idaho, y otros representantes de la comunidad vasca.
The proposition for the creation of special license plates in tribute to the Basque cultural heritage has reached/passed the last step/hurdle – the signature of the state governor – and is official. Beginning January 1, 2006, the citizens of Idaho that solicit it will be able to select for their cars a special plate license representative of the state’s Basque community. The Idahoan legislator, Carlos Bilbao, the sponser of the bill, accompanied Governor Kempthorne during the signing of the decree, together with Pete Cenarrusa, former Secretary of State, Ben Ysursa, the current Secretary of State of Idaho, and other members of the Basque community.

El gobernador del Estado de Idaho, Dirk Kempthorne, firmó el pasado viernes el proyecto de ley para la creación de placas de matrícula (patentes) especiales en homenaje al patrimonio cultural vasco. La ley entrará en vigor a comienzos de 2006 y permitirá a los ciudadanos de Idaho que así lo deseen lucir en su auto una matrícula en homenaje a la cultura vasca y su contribución histórica a este estado norteamericano.
Boise, Idaho, USA. The governor of the State of Idaho, Dirk Kempthorne, signed the proclamation last Friday for the creation of license plates that pay homage to Basque cultural heritage. The bill will be in full effect as of January 2006 and will permit that Idaho citizens so wishing to may display on their vehicles license plates that pay homage to the Basque culture and its historic contribution to this North American state.
Hasta ahora, y debido a las características del sistema de matriculación americano (que permite a los ciudadanos elegir el nombre o número de su placa) podían verse matrículas que rezan 'basque', 'basko', o nombres de localidades vascas y otras palabras en euskera. La página web del San Francisco Basque Club recoge un amplia muestra de ellas. En el caso de las recién aprobadas matrículas vascas de Idaho (Basque License Plates) es ahora el propio fondo y diseño de la placa el que muestra imágenes y simbolos arraigados en la cultura vasco americana.
Up to now and due to the nature of the American license plate system (which permits its citizens to select a name or number for their plates), people have been able to see license plates that boldly display 'basque’, basco’ or local Basque names, places and other words in the Basque language. The web page for the San Francisco Basque Club gathers a large example of these names. In the case of the recently approved Basque license plates in Idaho, it is the official background and design of the plate that shows images and symbols rooted in the Basque – American culture.
El emprendimiento, presentado e impulsado en el Legislativo de Idaho por el diputado Carlos Bilbao, quien ha hecho llegar a euskalkultura.com el modelo de la futura matrícula vasca, incorpora a la placa idahoense uno de los iconos tradicionales de la comunidad eusko-americana: el 'karrokanpo o ardikarroa, la clásica carreta en la que vivían los primeros pastores emigrantes vascos durante sus largas campañas de los montes de Idaho. Al fondo, con color azul, pueden verse los bosques y las montañas del estado. En la parte superior de la placa se lee la palabra 'Idaho', mientras que la inferior incluye la leyenda 'Basque'. The enterprise presented and put forth to the Idaho Legislatura by the representative Carlos Bilbao, who provided eskalkultura.com with a model example of the future Basque plate incorporates into the Idaho plates traditional icons of the Basque American community: the Camp Wagon or Sheep wagon, the classic vehicle where the first Basque immigrant sheepherders lived during their long stays in the mountains of Idaho. In the background, in blue, one can see the forests and mountains of the state. In the upper middle of the plate one can read the word “Idaho”, while in the lower center it reads the “Basque”. Representación vasca en la firma
La propuesta de ley culmina así un camino que comenzó el pasado 11 de febrero, fecha en la que fue presentada a la Cámara de Representantes de la mano de Carlos Bilbao, diputado por Emmett. La propuesta ha contado en todo momento con el apoyo del ex-secretario de Estado Pete Cenarrusa y el 'Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies', fundación cultural que dirige el historiador John Bieter y a la que se destinan los fondos que pueda proporcionar la puesta en marcha de esta medida. Precisamente, esta organización de promoción y difusión de la cultura vasco-americana se ha hecho cargo del diseño de la placa y los gastos derivados, tal y como explicita el texto legal.
The passing of the bill culminated after a long journey that started this past February 11, the date in which it was introduced in the House of Representatives by Carlos Bilbao, representative for Emmett. Support of the initiative for the bill always was there by the former Secretary of State Pete Cenarrusa and the Cenarrusa Center for Basque Studies which is a cultural foundation directed by the historian, John Bieter and for which a portion of the funds generated from the sale of the plates will be directed. In actuality, this organization whose mission is to promote and diffuse Basque-American cultura has taken charge of the design of the plate and the costs asociated with it as provided in the legal text of the bill.
El acto oficial de la firma tuvo lugar el pasado viernes en la Oficina del Gobernador de Idaho, Dick Kempthorne. Asistió una representación de la comunidad vasca de Idaho, encabezada por el representante Carlos Bilbao, impulsor de la ley y el ex-Secretario de Estado y fundador del Cenarrusa Center Pete Cenarrusa, junto a su esposa Freda.
The official signing ceremony took place last Friday in the office of Governor of Idaho, Dirk Kempthorne. In attendance there was representation from the Basque community of Idaho, headed by the represenative Carlos Bilbao, who introduced the bill, and the former Secretary of State, Pete Cenarrusa joined by his wife, Freda.
Allí se encontraban también el actual Secretario de Estado, el vasco-americano Ben Ysursa y miembros de la colectividad euskaldun de Idaho como la joven Julia Bengoechea-Little, Lucy Garatea y Rosie Williams, testigo ésta última de una parte importante de la historia vasca en Idaho a sus 100 años de edad. Also present were the current Secretary of State, the Basque-American Ben Ysursa, and members of the collective Basque community of Idaho like the young Julia Bengoechea-Little, Lucy Garatea and Rosie Williams this last having witnessed an important part of the Basque history in Idaho at her 100 years of age.
